The demonstration against the dumping of wastewater into the sea that took place on Sunday, February 27, in the silos It has been one of the most important in the history of this municipality on Isla Baja, although the number of attendees varies greatly according to the sources consulted. For local police, there were about 400 people, and between 2,500 and 2,800, depending Los Silos-Isla Baja Platform. Despite the fact that those attending the protest blame the current situation on the City Councils of Los Silos and Garachico and the Cabildo de Tenerifethe mayor from Silense, Macarena Fuentes (CC)surprised yesterday by assuring EL DÍA that he applauds “with capital letters” this Sunday’s demonstration and that he shares with the attendees the demand and the objective of “ending all wastewater discharges into the sea.”

The Los Silos-Isla Baja Platform He thanked everyone for attending “the successful demonstration held under the common slogan of rejecting any discharge into the sea”. For this group, “people took to the streets to reject the incoherent and not very transparent environmental policies of the Council of Tenerife and the accomplice town halls of Los Silos and Garachico, causing an authentic ecological attack that can also be extrapolated to the rest of Tenerife and the Archipelago». During the tour banners could be seen with slogans such as “Cabildo, no more discharges”, “zero discharges”, “Cabildo do not lie”, “a clean sea is health”, “for the coast to enjoy, no more discharges to the sea”, ” clean seas”, “we fight for our Low Island without spills”, “this stinks” or “I do take care of the sea”. The spokesperson for the organizing group, Robert Hernandezalso demanded the immediate annulment of the agreement between Garachico, Los Silos and the Tenerife Island Water Council (Ciatf) that allows the transfer of wastewater between both municipalities so that they leave through the regional outfall, located on the Silense coast.

“The waters that now come from Garachico were poured directly into the Las Cruces ravine and from there into our sea. And that could not be allowed”

Macarena Fuentes (CC) – Mayor of Los Silos

The protesters moved from the Placeta de La Costitución to the Charco de la Araña, through the TF-42 road and other municipal roads. The march passed without incident and the mayor also wanted to thank the civility shown by the protesters. Macarena Fuentes He insisted that he applauded “all the people who demand an end to dumping throughout the Canary Islands, but illegal dumping has been taking place on our coast for decades and the only thing we have done with this agreement is put an end to an environmental attack that has already an illegality. What has not been done in 30 or 40 years, unfortunately, we cannot do in two, but we are firm advocates of zero discharges into the sea. It is also our goal.”

“We are looking for solutions and we want an adequate wastewater treatment and reuse system to be put into operation in the region of the Low Island. This agreement is only an intermediate step to put an end to illegal dumping that is now controlled and monitored by the Tenerife Island Water Council. The waters that now come from Garachico were poured directly into the Las Cruces ravine and from there into our sea. And that could not be allowed, “says Macarena Fuentes.
