The insular group of CC in the Cabildo warns that “Aena does not contemplate the new terminal of the Tenerife South Airport in the period 2022-2026”. The nationalist formation has requested an Extraordinary Plenary of the Corporation and has sent a letter to the president of the Cabildo and to the social and economic agents to seek an institutional position. For its part, Airports and Air Navigation clarifies that what is planned for this temporary stage is the drafting of the project that would be the first thing to be completed. Regarding the works, he considers that “they are not a priority.” The insular spokesman for CC, Carlos Alonso, assures that the decision “is a serious detriment to the tourism sector” and seeks consensus in “defending the interests of Tenerife.”
CC refers to Aena’s proposal for the Airport Regulation Document for the years 2022-2026 (DORA II) in which «the investment necessary for the construction of a new terminal in Tenerife South does not appear without this being a strategic installation of the company in the aforementioned period ”.
Alonso assures: «We have requested an Extraordinary Plenary for September to seek an institutional agreement and a unanimous position. The approval of the Dora II is imminent and the Cabildo’s reaction must be urgent. He also considers it “important” that “it is also supported by social, institutional and economic agents, as it was three years ago.”
Carlos Alonso demands that AENA “comply with Tenerife” and dedicate the necessary investment to the new Tenerife South terminal, as it is going to do in the extensions of the Adolfo Suárez, El Prat and Palma airports.
CC-PNC has sent a letter to the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, and to the aforementioned agents, where he defends “the inclusion of the new terminal in the Dora II as a strategic investment by Aena so that it can be put into service before the end of the programming period foreseen in the document ”. The characteristics of the terminal building “must be in accordance with the requirements of the Cabildo.”
Aena sources recall that “in Tenerife South the expansion works of the terminal building are currently being carried out, one of the most important investments in terminals that are being carried out throughout the Aena network.” They add that “traffic forecasts do not indicate that it is necessary to expand further in the Dora II (2022-2026).”
As is the case in the rest of the network, these sources point out, “the largest amounts of investment projects in capacity have been transferred to Dora III (2027-2031), as is the case in Madrid or Barcelona, since the Covid-19 has caused traffic figures to fall and its recovery is expected, according to international organizations, for the final stretch of the Dora II period.
“In no case, Aena values, are the projects renounced, but the investment calendar is adjusted to the impact of the pandemic.” Thus, they add, “the Dora II incorporates the first steps of these large investments in capacity. In the case of Tenerife Sur, it is about the drafting of the project for a new terminal, in whose design the Cabildo has collaborated.
The Dora investments, they indicate, “are in addition to those still being executed within the current Dora period, more than 140 million euros, which will allow the airport to handle up to 16 million passengers / year (in 2019 there were 11.2) with a notable improvement in the quality of the service ». The Dora II, they argue, “collects 171.3 million euros in investments in the Canary Islands, of which 60 correspond to the airports of Tenerife.” Aena concludes: “This line is the one that has been worked on with the Cabildo in recent years with the support of the airlines.”
