The only thing that remains unchanged is Tuesday’s bank holiday and the presence of the amusement fair in a month without carnivals

The rain made an appearance on Friday night in the capital, as if it knew it was Cavalcade Friday, and did not want to miss it. He never does it at Carnival. And it is that the rain and the funfair, which also opened its doors on Friday in the Palmetum car park, are the only two things that come this weekend to remind the chicharreros that the street party should already have started. To be fair, in the nearest Chinese (it does not matter where that is), Carnival is also present, whether it is celebrated in February or not. There, the wigs and various costumes do not know winter, spring or summer.

The thing about staying in the Orche, or in the Águila, or in the Saucer, or in San Francisco, or at any point in the carnival ring, will have to wait to see if, in June, when galas and contests are held, the pandemic allows that the party in the street is a reality.

Meanwhile, carnival-goers at heart will be missing these days preparing a costume the day before going out, with the silicone gun joining something more than decorations and fabrics, at a friend’s house doing the preview and making a list of what he is wearing each one in the backpack, supermarket bag or shopping cart, which is seen on all Carnival nights.

After a busy Friday and Saturday, Sunday is usually that day to rest and regain strength to face a Carnival Monday before a festive Tuesday, where the Coso is the real protagonist. This year, despite the fact that there is no Carnival, Tuesday, March 1, is still a holiday, which has left a bridge at the end of February in which, without Carnival, it seems that it is not going anywhere. Of course, the little ones continue to enjoy a week of vacations in many schools on the Island, although the party goes to June.

There will also be no Burial of the Sardine, or Friday and Saturday Piñata, that extra that many party lovers take advantage of to make up for any setbacks from the previous days, or simply to say goodbye to Carnival in style until next year.

Massive concerts, a dog or a blowout at dawn, getting lost to find yourself two hours later, looking for a free taxi at dawn, getting on a busted tram, or walking up to the farthest neighborhoods of the center… All this and more will be missing. least many carnival people in this atypical February.

But if there is something that can be done these days to cheer up the carnival soul a little, it is to play that music that, as soon as it sounds, the body knows it is Carnival. Marejada, Píntame, The little window of love, Life is a Carnival… Any of them will serve to spend this week better. Songs that the councilor for Fiestas de Santa Cruz, Alfonso Cabello, has already advanced that will be the protagonists if, finally, there is a party in the street. His intention is that the Canarian orchestras, but also singers who, without being Canarians, are closely linked to the Islands, star in the June Carnival nights.
