Pedro Martín revalidates his leadership in the PSOE of Tenerife without the need for primaries

Peter Martin revalidates his position as general secretary of the PSOE of Tenerife without the need to open a primary process. The only candidate, also president of the Cabildo, has received the unanimous support of a socialist militancy that has shown its support as a block. Martín exceeds the maximum number of possible guarantees before the celebration in the capital of Tenerife of the XVII Insular Congress, on March 19 and 20, where he will be officially proclaimed. The Insular Commission of Ethics and Guarantee of the PSOE in Tenerife has verified and validated the guarantees presented that widely exceed the required percentage of 15% of the affiliates. In addition, Martín complies with all the requirements established for the development of his functions.

“Thanks to the militancy that has supported me to be, again, general secretary of the PSOE of Tenerife for the next four years.” It was the first message on his social networks from Martín. He adds that “it is time to continue working to improve our Island and continue with the socialist project on it.” Martin yesterday highlighted The day the fact of “being able to finish these four years as general secretary”. He considers key “to complete a work process without having to resort to a manager, something common in the recent past.”

No continuity.

In the last two decades and at least with the five island socialist general secretaries prior to Martín, there has been no such continuity for different reasons. The current values arriving “with a united party thanks to a powerful integration effort. Beyond the different opinions that have always existed and will exist in the Socialist Party». In this sense, the general secretary of the PSOE highlights «not having to go to a primaries because we have received sufficient support. A joy that I appreciate and also, of course, a responsibility. Martín has also valued the current moment as “magnificent” to give this image of solidity “when the socialists govern in Spain, in the Canary Islands and in Tenerife.” Pedro Martín ends his reflections with a message addressed to all island socialists: “See you at Congress on March 19 and 20.”

Re-election.

Pedro Martín announced last January his intention to stand for re-election as General Secretary of the Socialist Party in Tenerife within the framework of the XVII Insular Congress in March. He anticipated that he will also present his candidacy for the presidency of the Cabildo for the next elections in 2023. Martín maintained then and now maintains his “illusion” to consolidate “the work for Tenerife.”

XVII Congress.

The XVII Insular Congress of the PSOE of Tenerife will be held on March 19 and 20, 2022 in the capital of Tenerife. During its development, the Insular Executive for the next four years will be presented, in addition to approving the framework paper and the lines of action that will set the course for political formation on the Island.

Primaries.

In November 2017, the then mayor of Guía de Isora, Pedro Martín, was elected general secretary of the PSOE of Tenerife after primary elections. Martín obtained 1,038 votes (62.83%), while the deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands Gloria Gutiérrez obtained the support of 614 ballots (37.17%). A total of 2,582 militants were summoned to these primaries, who were able to vote in most of the party’s local groups distributed throughout the Island. Participation reached 63% of the census. Martín has held the position since December of that year.

From municipalism.

Pedro Martín Domínguez (Guía de Isora, 1965) has a degree in Psychology from the Central University of Barcelona. He was mayor of his town since 1995 –the youngest in the Canary Islands by the PSOE, at 29 years old– until achieving the presidency of the Cabildo de Tenerife in 2019. Previously, he obtained successive absolute majorities in the municipal elections of 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015. He took office as a deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands for the Island of Tenerife in the legislature that began on June 21, 2011. After two years simultaneously his functions as mayor, an agreement of his party so that the same person could not hold two public positions, led him in October 2013 to the decision to resign from the act of regional deputy. In November 2017 he won the primaries for the Insular Secretariat of the PSOE in Tenerife and was ratified in the Insular Congress in December. On July 24, 2019, he became president of the Island Council, succeeding Carlos Alonso (CC) based on an agreement between PSC-PSOE, C’s and Sí Podemos Canarias (support from outside the government) that led to a motion of censorship.
