The deputies congress Yesterday, it unanimously approved that the central government guarantee the financing of the Southern train “according to budget availability.” In addition, it urges the Executive to maintain collaboration with the Cabildos, taking into account the strategic nature of the railway. It did so after accepting a compromise amendment to the Proposal Not of Law (PNL) presented by Ciudadanos (Cs), from which their request to include the railway projects of Tenerife and Gran Canaria in the Railway Network of General Interest (RFIG) is excluded).

The support of United We Can for the initiative stands out. Roser Maestro, your spokesperson in the Committee on Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, considered precisely that “it would be positive if the central government evaluated the suitability of each of these lines within the General Interest Railway Network”. The yes of Podemos is justified in the framework of the environmental benefits that guided transport provides and the support that this political group maintains for initiatives that promote sustainable mobility.

This position of the purple formation contrasts with the refusal expressed by its three deputies in the Parliament of the Canary Islands the day before yesterday, becoming the only ones who voted against requesting the inclusion of the Gran Canaria and Tenerife train projects in the RFIG . Interestingly, in the Cabildo de Gran Canaria they supported the railway work on said Island. Podemos did so on the same day (January 28) that the Tenerife Island Corporation voted against the South train.

Juan Ignacio López-Bas, deputy of Cs and proponent, defended an initiative “of guarantees and commitment” that contributes to sustainability, in addition to being an exercise of “solidarity” with the island territory. “It is guaranteed that there will be the financing and the strategic vision of these trains.”

Ana Zurita (PP) He reproached the contradiction that he perceives in that Ciudadanos raises this initiative in Madrid and withdraws it in the Cabildo de Tenerife previously, for “maintaining the chair of his counselor”, alluding to Enrique Arriaga. Reference also raised by Pablo Calvo (VOX). The popular deputy demanded the train of the South as “priority for” being fundamental for the development of the Island. She reminded Zurita that the central government has invested 30 million in this project and warned that “what guarantees its execution is its inclusion in the RFIG.”

Ana Oramas (CC) He assured that the train of the South is supported by 14 environmental, union and social groups and spoke of the benefits in investment and employment that this work would have. Juan Bernardo Fuentes (PSOE) put on the table that the Canarian Government is the one that must request the inclusion of the trains in the Railway Network of General Interest, following a decision by the Cabildos.
