SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 22 (EUROPE PRESS) –

The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has assured that the Autonomous Community will spend “every last euro” on the Sustainable Energy Strategy of the Canary Islands, a public investment plan endowed with 466.67 million euros corresponding to recovery funds and resilience.

This was stated in the control session to the Government in the Plenary of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, in response to questions from the deputy Nira Fierro (PSOE) and Casimiro Curbelo (ASG) about the impact of the Sustainable Energy Strategy in the Islands Canary Islands.

Ángel Víctor Torres lamented that from the opposition they describe the signing of the Canary Agenda for Sustainable Development as a “propagandistic act”, a strategy that, he recalled, should have been carried out in 2016 and those who now criticize it “did absolutely nothing”.

Torres highlighted that in 2019 there were less than 200 infrastructures with photovoltaic panels and today there are more than 2,000; wind energy in the Islands has doubled between 2017 and 2017; the commitment to renewable energies has quadrupled in the Archipelago; Projects such as the dismantling of the Refinery in Tenerife or the Salto de Chira in Gran Canaria have been promoted, and the Climate Change Law has been developed, which will be approved in this legislature.

According to the president, these are steps that are being taken to ensure that the Canary Islands have a “clear” place in the geographical and climatic world for wind and photovoltaic energy, and it means “correcting years of delay”.

The deputy Nira Fierro, for her part, affirmed with the economic boost that the signing of the Sustainable Energy Strategy implies “we will comply” with the Jameos Pact and with the commitment to decarbonize the Islands.

Meanwhile, Deputy Casimiro Curbelo emphasized that for the first time in the history of the Canary Islands there is a strategic plan for sustainable energy, among other reasons, because there are economic means. In addition, he said that we must be “ready to cooperate” in that direction because the fight against climate change and the firm commitment to sustainability must be something that “occupies us and worries us.”
