The contagion curve in the Canary Islands has slowed its fall and has stabilizedbut it has done so very far from the suitable index, according to the Public Health indices, to consider this latest wave controlled. The Archipelago has a 7-day incidence rate of 262.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants; five times more than the recommended rate: 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Canary Islands have been reducing their incidence for a month. The descent of the curve began in mid-January when in the Islands this indicator was at 1,703 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Until last February 4, the incidence had fallen 80% in less than a month. However, since then, the curve has barely reduced by 26%.

The same trend has occurred at the same time in all the islands, and none of them, separately, reaches the ideal rate. Although the majority maintain their curve stable above 200 cases – except for Lanzarote, which has dropped to an incidence of 150 -, Fuerteventura has experienced a slight rise in its curve in the last week.

Regarding the last day, The Canary Islands have added 458 cases of coronavirus. Of these, 123 have been registered in Tenerife, which represents the lowest number of infections on the island since December 9. Gran Canaria, for its part, adds 235 cases to its statistics, the lowest figure since December 15. Fuerteventura registers 38 cases; La Palma 35; Lancelot 17; La Gomera 9; and Iron 1.

Hospitalizations

The Canary Islands have reduced their care pressure by more than 150 patients this week, which represents a 30% decrease in beds occupied by covid compared to last Sunday. Since the beginning of the month, hospitalizations have been reduced by 45%, from 720 to 395 registered on the last day.

Tenerife is the island that is experiencing the most pronounced assistance relief. Since the beginning of the month, the island has reduced its beds occupied by covid patients by half, going from 379 admissions to 177. In the same time, Gran Canaria has also reduced it, but only by 34%. Today, in addition, the number of hospitalized in this capital island (which amounts to 205) is, for the first time since the sixth wave began, greater than that of Tenerife.

La Palma has 7 covid patients, Fuerteventura with 5 (one more than the previous day) and La Gomera with one. The hospitals of El Hierro and Lanzarote are free of covid.

Deceased

The Archipelago has registered four deaths from covid on the day. Three of them have occurred in Gran Canaria and one in Tenerife, as it is a public holiday, the data is pending validation by Public Health. Since Monday there have been 32 deaths from covid in the Archipelago, which is the lowest weekly figure of the entire sixth wave. In addition, it is similar to the data on deaths prior to the arrival of ómicron in the Archipelago.

So far in February, 135 deaths from the virus have been recorded, which, together with those registered in January, amount to 413. This means that one in four deaths that have occurred in the Islands during the pandemic have done so in this month and a half.
