Fepeco emphasizes the urgency of building the regasification plant in Tenerife

Óscar Izquierdo, president of the Provincial Federation of Construction Entities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Fepeco), insists on demanding that the Island be equipped with a regasification plant. He demands it under the statement of the Minister of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, “who has been in favor of the use of natural gas in the Canary Islands, considering it an essential piece of the bridge between traditional systems of energy consumption and the model we are going to». The minister also recalled “that the energy transition cannot be done overnight”.

Izquierdo points out that a realistic energy policy requires combining renewable energy, pumping and interconnections, “without losing sight of hydrogen.” Europe sets 2050 as the year to reach the 100% renewable target. “In the Canary Islands, starting from a situation worse than that of the continent, the aim is to achieve this goal ten years earlier, in 2040, and avoid the transition stage,” he says.

The president of Fepeco maintains that in that period “it is necessary to use natural gas for the power plants of the Canary Islands, ceasing to burn diesel, fuel and diesel, which have made these plants the most polluting in Europe.” Óscar Izquierdo points out that the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Canarian Government “has ignored this reality”.

In this context, the Presidency of the construction employers association states that last December the central government put in public information the proposal to “approve the use of natural gas as fuel in the Canary Islands”, a measure that must be approved soon. “We believe that it should be the president of the Canarian Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, who takes the reins and turns towards realism and energy security in our land,” says Óscar Izquierdo.
