Edari has already been treating wastewater and industrial water since December. Fran Palero

The mayors and municipal secretaries of the town councils of Candelaria, Arafo and Güímar met yesterday in this last Consistory to discuss the agreement that obliges them to maintain and monitor the Industrial Water Treatment Plant (Edari) of the Güímar Valley Industrial Estate, which The three local administrations have shared ownership since 2013.

Although in December the Edari already began the pre-treatment of the water, this will not be finished before the summer, and it will be there, according to the representatives of Arafo and Güímar, when that agreement is signed and not before, as is theoretically the intention of the Cabildo and of Candelaria, whose mayor, Mari Brito, did not want to make statements yesterday.
Güímar, so that the same thing does not happen as in 2013 when the Polígono was received without warning beforehand that the authorization of the submarine outfall had expired, which finally led to a judicial process -three former mayors and Mari Brito are being prosecuted-, exposed the need to postpone the signing of the agreement to the date of completion of the work and the full performance of the Edari.

Juan Ramón Martín, mayor of Arafo, pointed out, however, that the long meeting “was fruitful”: “Arafo is going to work in three ways: signing the agreement, maintenance of the Polígono and discharge regulations. I am optimistic by nature and I am sure that sooner rather than later there will be that agreement”. Progress is expected at a future meeting with the Insular Water Council.

The insular councilor for the area, Javier Rodríguez, recalls that “the Insular Water Council will be the administration that assumes the management and exploitation of the Edari, but, as it is a municipal responsibility, we need a regulatory framework, and I hope that soon we can have an agreement on the text of the agreement”.
