The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, reproached the community of Madrid this Wednesday for having only taken in five unaccompanied migrant minors due to its population size, and on the contrary, he highlighted the example of Catalonia, with nearly fifty.
In statements to journalists, he said that there is “a lot of hypocrisy” regarding the reception of minors because there are political parties with a demanding discourse that later does not correspond when they are part of the governments.
The Canarian president has indicated that the Canary Islands have always been competent to care for and protect migrant minors “but never like now”, with more than 2,800, for which he has once again demanded “shared responsibility” from the autonomous communities, which so far they have barely derived to just over 200.
He has said that this situation is going to be debated at the next Conference of Presidents and at the Canary Islands-State bilateral, first to “reach out” to the autonomous communities and if there is no reciprocity, undertaking regulatory and legislative changes.
