SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Feb. 16 (EUROPE PRESS) –

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, received this Wednesday at the Insular Palace the ambassador of the United Kingdom in Spain, Hugh Elliot, who has been on an official visit to the island since last Monday.

During the meeting, both leaders exchanged views on the prospects for the recovery of British tourism by 2022, especially after the relaxation of the sanitary measures imposed on the entry of minors.

Pedro Martín valued the work and the constant exchange of information that Tenerife and the United Kingdom have maintained during the pandemic, as well as the important intermediation work of the ambassador.

“From the Cabildo we have provided regular information on the pandemic situation on the island, and the ambassador has always been available to resolve any issue and facilitate dialogue with the United Kingdom, something especially important for us, taking into account the weight that the British tourism in Tenerife,” he said in a note.

Hugh Elliot, for his part, highlighted the magnificent relationship between the British Embassy and the Cabildo and assured that the collaboration has been continuous.

“I have spoken with the president on several occasions to address all the challenges we have had with the pandemic and the different restrictions on mobility in these two years, and the truth is that it is a great pleasure to come back here,” he said.

In relation to tourism, Hugh Elliot was optimistic and hopes that this will be the year of recovery.

“I am always very optimistic and I see that the reserves are doing well, but it is important to remain cautious. We cannot say with certainty what the next step will be, but the perspectives are very positive,” he concluded.

The meeting was also attended by the CEO of Acción Exterior, Liskel Álvarez, and the Honorary Vice Consul in Tenerife, Helen Díaz de Arcaya Keating.

Liskel Álvarez emphasized “the importance of continuing to work so that trade relations between Tenerife and the United Kingdom remain fluid, despite the problems arising from the pandemic and the country’s departure from the European Union”.

The CEO recalled that the United Kingdom is Spain’s main trading partner and explained that the meeting discussed the possibilities offered by the country for companies on the island related to emerging sectors, “such as the audiovisual industry”.
