The Bishop of the Diocese of the Canary Islands —representing the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura–, Jose Mazuelos Perezhas been convinced that his counterpart from the Diocese of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez, does not hate anyone or arouse hatred towards anyone. “I put my hand in the fire,” she said.
This was stated this Wednesday during a press conference when asked about the fact that Álvarez had gone to testify before the Prosecutor’s Office for some statements in which he linked homosexuality with a mortal sin, a few words for which he has already apologized.
“Now it’s always about ‘I report you.’ many times I am in tension because one says ‘we will see today how they are going to turn around what I say’he indicated.
In this sense, he has assured that he has no doubt that the bishop of Tenerife does not hate anyone or that he “raises hatred” towards anyone. “That is very clear to me,” he asserted, “and I put my hand in the fire.”
Mazuelos understood that on many occasions there is a “great” interest in going to court. “What are we going to the judges for? For what? So that we are constantly in the media because later the judge comes and is going to say: ‘Look, stop messing around'”he claimed.
“I put my hand in the fire that Don Bernardo has no leisure for any human person of any condition and that he will continue to fight for the dignity of people as he has done until now through his Diocese,” he reiterated.
Meanwhile, he has placed special emphasis on the fact that every person has dignity and deserves “all the respect in the world” regardless of their condition. “That – she continued – is what I have learned in the gospel that I have been taught.”
“In the Church we fight so that the dignity and equality of people is always respected. They will always find us there, in the common good,” the bishop concluded.
