All public lighting in the municipality of Santiago del Teide will be replaced, with the aim of promoting its efficiency and energy savings. For this, the City Council has received a subsidy from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, money from the European Regional Development Funds (Feder). It is 1,581,543 euros, an amount that is equivalent to 85% of the total subsidy that the Santiago City Council had requested to undertake this action. “The purpose is to replace the 1,961 lights used in public lighting with others using LED technology with remote management,” says the mayor of the municipality, Emilio Navarro.
Of these 1,961 luminaires, the action to be carried out contemplates the elimination of 164, although the placement of 63 new units is projected in order to comply with current regulations on this matter. Overall, 1,597 lights will be replaced by new LED technology and a GPRS system will be installed in another 200 lights that will not change.
The action will provide 61% energy savings and reduce economic spending on this service
Regarding the control panels, the work to be carried out contemplates that from the initial 26 there will be 28, taking into account that the restructuring of this equipment will be necessary. 22 of them will be replaced by new ones and a remote management system will be installed. One of the direct consequences of this intervention is that the power in use will experience a notable reduction, going from 208 kilowatts (kW) to 81.8, with the consequent energy saving, which is estimated to reach 61%.
The contribution received from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition is part of the line of subsidies for unique projects of local entities that favor the transition to a low-carbon economy, within the framework of the Feder Operational Program for sustainable growth for the period 2014-2020.
Emilio Navarro points out that with the combination of LED technology and a comprehensive management system, “the municipality acquires total control over its lighting, obtains significant energy and economic savings, given the longer useful life of the luminaires, the reduction in cost of maintenance as well as the tons of CO2 that are no longer emitted into the atmosphere. It is a clear commitment by Santiago del Teide to digitization and energy efficiency”.
