For us, the honors are retired. There is a plenary agreement that was reached at the time, what happens is that what the TSJC says is that to substantiate that in a file, an ex officio review must be carried out, and that is what we are going to do, proceed to review it, according to the procedure, but for us the honors are already withdrawn”. This is how the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, expressed himself yesterday about the ruling of the Canarian high court in which the City Council is forced to resume the 2009 file, in which the honors of favorite son and the gold medal were withdrawn of the city to the dictator Francisco Franco.

The mayor pointed out that “it is an administrative issue, but it is true that things have to be done well, things cannot be done in a rough way because someone can file a complaint with the courts and what has happened can happen”, in a clear allusion to his position before the Catalog of Francoist vestiges.

“I defend the application of Historical Memory in accordance with the law, because if not, anyone can claim, and if things are not done well, we get the opposite effect. I am trying to explain it, and, fortunately, the Tenerife Historical Memory Association understands it. The Government intends to jump into a pool that may be used by many actors, not by the City Council; I believe that this decision has legal weakness”, clarified Bermúdez. As for whether he has had any more contact about the Catalog, the mayor said no, adding that “officially we have not received anything, not even the proposal that goes to the Technical Commission.”
