The Francoist mayors will be removed from the ante-plenary room. Fran Palero

The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, affirmed yesterday that “the Historical Memory Law is there to comply with it. And that is what this government group has been doing throughout this mandate to completely eliminate any type of Francoist symbology in La Laguna, both in public and private spaces. Among these measures, the local councilor announced that “in the near future we are going to remove the photographs of the Francoist mayors who are in the ante-plenary room.”

Likewise, the first deputy mayor and spokesperson for United can, Rubens Ascanio, recalled that “there are still the spaces that we have denounced that we understand violate the Law of Historical Memory”, referring to two plaques alluding to the dictatorship in the churches de La Concepción and Valle de Guerra and another at the main entrance of the IES La Laboral. “Several official letters and writings have been sent by the City Council requesting the removal of these elements that do not comply with this regulation and, for the time being, there has been no adequate response,” he pointed out.

In addition, the mayor indicated that “we also already have the procedure, through the Presidency”, to comply with “the latest plenary agreements linked to the Law of Historical Memory”, with the renown, for example, of Manuel Lora-Tamayo streets and Narciso de Vera Marrero.

Issues that will be addressed in “the technical work commission, whose formula is yet to be defined and is about to be formed, to carry out a study similar to the one developed by the Government of the Canary Islands to advance in compliance with this law,” he announced. To which “other elements are expected to be incorporated”, such as the honors pending withdrawal, for example, from “the rest of the Francoist mayors of the city and some other political or religious leaders who actively collaborated in the Francoist repression”, as well as elements “such as the plates with the yoke and the arrows in the VPO” built by the Ministry of Housing during the Franco era.

Likewise, he pointed out that “within the list of the Government of the Canary Islands with respect to Santa Cruz, we have identified Calle Pintor José Aguiar, a street that is also in La Laguna, for which it will be transferred to the commission for its incorporation into the list of names that exist. to change, just like the Pista Militar San Roque”.

Even so, Ascanio stressed that, “thanks to the work of the previous and current mandates, very notable progress has been made in this regard in the municipality of La Laguna, and these recognitions have practically been swept from all roads and public spaces. ”.
