Last January was the ninth warmest of the last 61 years in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands have recorded a month of January which was the ninth warmest in the last 61 years, with an average temperature of 15.4 degrees, which is 0.8 degrees higher than usual.

This has been reported by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet)which indicates that, in general, last January presented a warm character throughout the archipelago, although with some differences between the two provinces.

In general, the behavior was warm or very warm in Las Palmas, and warm in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In this way, the maximum temperature of 27 degrees was exceeded in 27 stations in the Canary Islands, all located in the western islands and Gran Canaria, with the sole exception of La Graciosa, highlighting the 29.1 degrees at the Tenerife-South airport on day 1, the highest temperature recorded in the Canary Islands during the month of January 2022.

In the province of Las Palmas, the highest average temperatures were recorded in the municipality of Mogán, with 19.9 degrees.

Also, in Fuerteventura, the highest average temperature was that of Pájara, with 19.3 degrees, while in Lanzarote 18.2 degrees were recorded in Yaiza, which represents an anomaly of one degree above what was expected.

On the other hand, the average rainfall recorded in the Canary Islands was 36.4 mm, 88 percent of the expected monthly average total rainfall, corresponding to a normal character.

Meanwhile, in the stations that measure insolation, the Aemet has verified a number of hours of sunshine that, on average, correspond to 115 percent of the insolation of the reference period 1981-2010. Percentages lower than the values of the reference period were only measured at Fuerteventura and Tenerife North airports.

The highest values of insolation were recorded in the Tenerife South airport, with 233 hours; Izaña, with 230.2 hours; Gran Canaria airport, with 216.4 hours; and in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with 213.8 hours.

This situation is similar to that experienced in the first ten days of February, with an episode of haze that will begin to subside today, Friday, after the entry of the first trade winds in the second half of yesterday. Low temperatures are expected for today, Friday, without ruling out maximums of 30 degrees in the west of Gran Canaria and haze in the eastern islands, to give way to a Saturday with cleaner winds from the northeast.
