Arona opens the renovated Calle México with a bike lane and garden areas

After the intervention on the road, Calle México is now fully accessible to people with reduced mobility, in addition to having more children’s play areas and various meeting points for citizens.

The action has been financed by 82% (618,800 euros) by the Regional Ministry of Tourism that directs Yaiza Castilla charged to the state Tourism Competitiveness Plan for the Canary Islands, via a grant to the Cabildo de Tenerife, which has also been responsible for contributing the other 18% (135,307 euros) of the total cost of the project.

This funding has been based by the Government of the Canary Islands on the need to fpromote the tourist and social revitalization of this municipalitylocated in the metropolitan area of ​​Tenerife Sur, by placing the pedestrian as the main protagonist of the road.

“Integrate the coastal landscape to the city”

In the words of the general director of Tourist Infrastructure, Fernando Miñarro, “it is a question of contemplating the example of how the integration of the coastal landscape into the city is carried out through the spatial improvement of its connection routes. It is useless to have wonderful places if our visitors do not have adequate access to them. We always forget that the important thing is not only the place, but how to get there.”

The Island Director of Tourism, Laura Castro, detailed how the Cabildo de Tenerife has put together an investment program in tourist equipment and infrastructure that is having as a result Substantial improvements to the island’s coastline and the surroundings of the main tourist centers, which complement the quality accommodation offer. “We are clear that the efforts in promotion and connectivity must go hand in hand with a tourism strategy that differentiates us and that enhances the virtues of the island as a destination, with investments, such as this one, in the improvement of urban spaces, which are aligned with sustainability and which the citizens of Tenerife can also enjoy”.

After this improvement, Mexico street is one of the main accesses to the coast and fulfills the objective of connecting the coastal landscape with the city in a much more attractive way. In addition, the intervention in the urban space was essential because it is an area where businesses, tourists and residents converge, so it was necessary to improve pedestrian traffic in order to also facilitate purchases in local businesses.

For his part, the mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, stressed that “the joint action of the different Administrations has allowed the municipality to deepen its strategic commitment to accessibility, eliminating barriers, renovating public space and favoring the improvement of a a key environment for our main economic activity, which is tourism, in addition to freeing access to the coast from obstacles”.
