A year and a half after its opening to the public, in a particularly difficult time due to the pandemic, Espacio La Granja, located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, faces a new season “with more enthusiasm than ever”. Despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus, this scenario, the most young of those managed by the Government’s Culture area, has gradually managed to carve out a prominent niche in the city’s cultural scene, attracting a growing number of spectators to its seats, explains the agency.
This support has led the team that coordinates the space to reinforce the lines of programming that have fit the most with the public, especially those for children and those for family audiences, while starting new ones aimed at youth. In addition, it now has a new circus endowment in its stage box that “makes this space one of the few, if not the only one in the Canary Islands, that will be able to program shows of this artistic discipline in a stable way, in addition to serving as support to the professional sector”, he adds.
One of its new programming lines, called Youth and Culture, will include specific stage proposals for this group and its concerns, with the added value that young people will be able to experience experiences with the artists who meet in the activities, in the form of courses , workshops and meetings. In addition, add to this line the Parliament of the Futurea mediation project designed by the Living Arts and Citizenship Laboratory of Tenerife, which will promote the participation of young people in dance, electronic music and critical thinking activities that invite dialogue and reflection.
Another novelty is the line called #EnelFoco, which is presented in coordination with the Guiniguada Theater in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, also owned by the Government. With it, it is intended to give support and space to proposals from emerging artists and companies that are beginning their professional career, with a special focus on those of new creation in the islands outside the capital.
On the other hand, it will continue to be the promoter of artistic and technical residences for companies that are in the process of researching or producing a new show, to which the circus discipline is now added, in addition to continuing to be the venue for screenings at Filmoteca Canaria and collaborating with the neighboring State Public Library in all those activities that value oral narration and literature.
The preparations for the programming that will be exhibited in the Espacio la Granja in 2022 have also been accompanied by a significant effort to improve the technical equipment, both for lighting and sound, now achieving updated and sustainable material that will also contribute to the improvement in the display of shows and their enjoyment by the public.
Programming Advance
The theater program in February begins with the premiere of the play Motherfrom La República (Friday 4), The Patarras Bearingfrom Abubukaka (Saturday 5); dream is life, by Thimbo Samb (especially aimed at young people/Friday the 11th); Y the good neighborhood, from Delirium Teatro (Saturday 12). Specific for young audiences, in addition to the project Parliament of the Future which will have sessions every month, also includes Transmission: danced conference on urban danceswith Guille Vidal-Ribas and Javi Casado, who will also give the Introductory workshop to the fundamentals of urban dances (February 25 and 26), especially for young people between 12 and 18 years old.
Added to this are several proposals from the line #enfocus: El Faro concert (February 19) and the play The tailor’s storyfrom La Sastrería Teatro (March 19).
On the other hand, on February 21 there will be a talk by the writer Mariano Gambín, organized as part of the course From creation to bookstorefrom the State Public Library.
On behalf of Filmoteca Canaria, every Thursday in February and March it will continue to screen films from the cycle of Polska Cinema: Lem Universewith the collaboration of the Polish Institute of Culture of Madrid and the International Animated Film Festival (Animayo), in addition to the usual Documentary of the Month.
It should be noted that part of this programming is the result of the proposals received at Espacio La Granja by the Canarian cultural sector, which may also continue to do so over the coming months. This option refers to scenic shows, from all artistic disciplines, as well as Cultural Projects and Extension of Festivals, whose selection is in charge of the Performing Arts Unit of the Canarian Institute of Cultural Development (ICDC), a public company to which management of this scenario has been entrusted.
