The haze decreases in intensity and will give way to showers with storms

The haze that affects from Friday to the whole Archipelago The Canary Islands will begin to decrease as of this Tuesday and will give way to rains that could be accompanied by storms as of Wednesday afternoon, especially in the southern half of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, according to the predictions of the Meteorology Statal Agency (Aemet), which has withdrawn the yellow notice for dust in suspension.

This risk warning was activated until last night in the three islands of the province of Las Palmas and in Tenerife, due to a reduction in visibility to 3,000 meters and even shorter distances in some areas, with an air quality index extremely unfavorable for health, according to the records of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

The haze will continue for several days, mainly in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, but as of tomorrow, Wednesday, a cloudy front with rains that will cleanse the atmosphere is expected to enter. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health The Government of the Canary Islands maintains the recommendation to take precautions against Saharan dust, such as avoiding prolonged exposure to the outside air, keeping the windows closed and not making physical efforts outdoors.

Yesterday, Monday, maximum temperatures were recorded that were around 24 degrees in the south of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and minimums of -3.8 in Las Cañadas del Teide and only one positive degree in the Gran Canaria summit. In the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the thermometers ranged between 19 and 16 degrees, according to the Aemet.

The prediction for Tuesday is slightly cloudy or clear skies, with intervals of high cloudiness during the afternoon, with minimum temperatures with few changes and maximum temperatures slightly rising, being more pronounced in inland areas. The haze persists, especially in the eastern islands and Tenerife, and visibility may be reduced.

showers

The changes come from tomorrow, with a predominance of skies covered by medium and high cloudiness, which will generate widespread rainfall on the islands with greater relief, which locally could be in the form of showers and be accompanied by a storm, mainly on the more Westerners.

The rains in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will be less likely and will be weak and occasional. Despite the cloudiness, the haze will continue, but less intense. Temperatures will rise moderately, without ruling out a more pronounced increase locally, except in the north of the islands with greater relief, where a slight decrease in the maximum is expected. A southerly component wind is also expected with strong intervals, more intense in the central peaks of Tenerife, where very strong gusts are expected.

Intervals of medium and high clouds are forecast for Thursday, accompanied by intervals of low clouds in the westernmost islands, with the probability of weak to moderate precipitation, which locally could be in the form of a shower, mainly during the first half of the day. It is expected that the haze will subside that day in La Palma and El Hierro and that the temperatures will experience a slight drop.

Since the dust in suspension will remain until Friday in the easternmost islands, extreme precautions are recommended for people sensitive to this type of episode, such as children, the elderly and people with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.

Among other measures, the health authorities advise not to go out and keep the doors and windows of the houses closed; perform cleaning of dusty surfaces with damp cloths; stay in humid environments and stay hydrated; do not perform physical exercises outside; and if respiratory symptoms worsen, call 112.
