The Town Hall of Tenerife approved this Friday an institutional motion, supported by all political formations, in which it expresses its condemnation of the statements of the Bishop of the Diocese, Bernardo Álvarez, on homosexuality, and rejects any form of LGBTIphobia on the island, according to the PSOE.
In the motion, which was promoted by the Socialist group, hate speech that promotes violence and discrimination against LGTBIQ+ people is also rejected.
The Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez, affirmed on Radiotelevisión Canaria last January 19 that homosexuality is a mortal sin and in the motion it is also agreed to transfer the unanimous position of the Cabildo de Tenerife both to the Bishopric and to the Spanish Episcopal Conference, as well as to the municipalities of the island.
The document also recognizes the rapid response of LGBTIQ+ groups on the island and the Canary Islands, as well as representatives of civil society and public and private institutions.
The CEO of Citizen Participation and Diversity of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Nauzet Gugliotta, affirms in a statement that the motion emphasizes that last year, in July 2021, all the political forces that make up the institution agreed, also unanimously, the approval of a motion that condemned physical, verbal or symbolic LGBTIphobic violence, in any of its manifestations, at which time the island was established as a territory free of LGBTIphobia.
In this way, the highest body of government, administration and representation of Tenerife showed its clear commitment to the defense of diversity, the fight for the rights of LGBTIQ+ people and against the discrimination and violence they suffer due to their condition, he adds. EFE
