Sí Podemos threatens to break the agreement that the Cabildo government gave the PSOE

Yes We Can Canary Islands announces that he will break his covenant with the PSOE, which supports from outside the council government, if the Socialists support in today’s plenary session (10:00 a.m., Plenary Hall) the proposal of their partner, Ciudadanos, to promote the south train. Yes We Can Canary Islands recalls that «the train projects of the South and the North are a red line in the signed programmatic agreements». The purple formation criticizes that “Enrique Arriaga (vice president and leader of Cs) does not seem to care that a consensus is fulfilled” that allows a government team made up of the PSOE and the orange formation. Sí Podemos Canarias recalls in a statement that in the agreement signed with the PSOE at the beginning of the mandate (July 2019) «by which we support the motion of censure to expel the Canarian Coalition from power after more than 30 years, this commitment”.

On July 10, 2019, PSOE (11 directors) Sí Podemos Canarias (3 directors), PSOE (11) and Ciudadanos (2) registered a motion of censure against the president of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, from CC (11 directors), that only 24 hours before he had signed a government agreement with the Popular Party (4 councillors). By virtue of that agreement, the socialist Pedro Martín became the new president of the Tenerife institution with the support of Cs and Sí Podemos Canarias, which was left out of the government group. His advisers, María José Belda, spokesperson, David Carballo and Ruth Acosta – resigning precisely in today’s plenary session to make way for Moisés Lubary – have supported the government group with their votes. The exception took place on November 19 of last year in the Plenary Commission for the Natural Environment, Primary Sector and Municipal Cooperation. The nationalist counselor Blanca Pérez presented a motion to suspend the tender for a recycling plant of the Tenerife Environmental Complex (CAT) in Arico, understanding that the intention was to “burn the garbage.” The initiative was supported by the Popular Party and also by Sí Podemos Canarias.

in minority

In the event that Sí Podemos Canarias withdraws its support from the government team, it would remain in the minority. It should be remembered that legally a new motion of censure is not possible since only one ene Cabildo is allowed during the four-year term. Sí Podemos Canarias criticized yesterday in its statement “the lack of scruples” of Enrique Arriaga in trying to break a pact “that has allowed him to be vice president of the Cabildo.” He also rejects “his interest in maintaining a place in island politics as of 2023, even if he does not have a party with which to continue his career.” Sí Podemos Canarias highlights that “Vice President Arriaga works to carry out CC projects”. The purple formation does not admit that the Insular Plan for Sustainable Mobility, in which the Cabildo works, contemplates the inclusion of the South train. They add that “now a citizen consultation is being carried out on the train projects.” They value that “facing the gallery and to convey the false feeling that decisions about mobility take into account the opinion of the people of Tenerife.”

Sí Podemos Canarias qualifies as “incoherent” that Cs bets on “ultra-developmental macroprojects” that involve “destroying our fragile territory.” This “without previously betting on improving the bus service and other non-invasive measures, such as the Bus-HOV lanes.” The cost of the infrastructure, estimated at more than 2,000 million euros, is another factor for rejecting the project. In the opinion of Sí Podemos Canarias, this means “throwing public money from the European Union and the State”.
