SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE/MADRID, Jan. 25. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Overnight stays in hotel establishments in the Canary Islands reached 30 million in 2021, which is 49.4% more than in 2020, when they fell by 70.1%, their largest decrease in the entire historical series, due to the effects of the crisis in the tourism sector, as reported on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Nationwide, overnight stays in hotel establishments reached 172.1 million in 2021, 86.7% more than in 2020, when they fell by 73.1%. This increase in overnight stays registered last year was the result of the increase in overnight stays by foreigners by 98.9%, almost double that in 2020, and, to a lesser extent, by those made by Spaniards, who rose by 76, 9% for the year as a whole. And all this despite the fact that hotel prices were 12.9% higher in 2021 than in 2020.

However, despite the strong rise in overnight stays registered by Spanish hotels in 2021, this indicator is still below pre-pandemic levels. Thus, compared to 2019, overnight stays fell by 49.8% last year, with falls of 63.4% in the case of overnight stays by foreigners and 24.4% in those made by Spanish.

Almost two thirds of overnight stays in hotel establishments in 2021 were concentrated between the months of May to September, with an increase of 176.5% compared to the same period in 2020.

This increase in overnight stays registered in 2021 was reached after in the month of December these were multiplied by more than four compared to the same month of 2020, to exceed the figure of 13.1 million.

However, if the data for December 2021 is compared with that for the same month in 2019, without a pandemic, overnight stays in hotel establishments showed a decrease of 22.3% in the last month of last year, due both to the decline in overnight stays made by foreigners (-30.8%) as well as those made by Spaniards (-10.2%).

The average stay in December increased by 18.3% compared to the same month in 2020, standing at 2.7 overnight stays per traveler.

The annual rate of the Hotel Price Index (HPI) stood at 20.6% in December, which is 32.5 points above that registered in the same month of 2020, and 3.4 points less than that registered last month.

During December, 11,251 hotel establishments were open in Spain, 43.6% more than in the same month of 2020, which represented 70.5% of the total directory of establishments in this month.

The Canary Islands, Andalusia and Catalonia were the main destinations of the total number of travelers in Spain in December, with 33.4%, 13.8% and 13.8 of the total overnight stays, respectively. The main destinations of travelers residing in Spain were Andalusia, Community of Madrid and Catalonia.

For its part, the main destination chosen by non-residents was the Canary Islands, with 55.7% of the total overnight stays. The following were Catalonia and Andalusia.

CANARY ISLANDS AND THE COMMUNITY OF MADRID, WITH THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF OCCUPATION

The Canary Islands had the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces during December (56.9%). It was followed by the Community of Madrid, with 46%.

In December, 40.1% of the places offered were covered, with an annual increase of 125.6%. The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces rose and stood at 44.1%.

By tourist areas, the South of Gran Canaria reached the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (64.2%), while the Island of Gran Canaria had the highest weekend occupancy (62.7%). The Island of Tenerife registered the highest number of overnight stays in December, with 1.61 million.

The tourist points with the most overnight stays were Madrid, Barcelona and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Mogán had the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (65.5%) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the highest weekend occupancy (68%).

Travelers from Germany and the United Kingdom accounted for 19% and 17.3%, respectively, of the total overnight stays by non-residents in hotel establishments in December.

Overnight stays by travelers from France, the Netherlands and Italy (the following source markets) accounted for 9.2%, 5.4% and 5% of the total, respectively.

SECTOR PROFITABILITY

The average daily turnover of hotels for each occupied room (ADR) was 91.5 euros in December, which represents an increase of 26.6% compared to the same month of 2020.

For its part, the average daily income per available room (RevPAR), which is conditioned by the occupancy registered in hotel establishments, reached 41.9 euros, with a rise of 160.2%.

By categories, the average turnover was 198.1 euros for five-star hotels, 96.7 euros for four-star hotels and 71.7 euros for three-star hotels. Revenue per available room for these same categories was 96.7, 48.2 and 34.8 euros, respectively.
