The City Council of La Laguna has informed this Saturday that it has approved to initiate the procedure to launch a public loan project of electric bikes in the university campuses and the helmet of the municipality.

It is a proposal that the Sustainable Mobility area is developing in collaboration with SAGULPA and that will allow, in a first intervention, to put into service one hundred vehicles and 20 docking stations, the City Council specified in a statement.

The initial investment necessary for the development of this first phase, which will allow the implementation of other basic operating infrastructures for the subsequent expansion of the municipal network, has been quantified at 1.3 million euros, with a budget provision already contemplated for this year by the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council.

The lagoon project is based on the experience developed by the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with which, since 2019, it has held joint meetings that have led to this action with the Municipal Parking Society of the Gran Canaria town (SAGULPA).

The first phase of this public bicycle system focuses on displacement of the educational community of the University of La Laguna (ULL) and it will be expanded, in successive phases, to generate a network suited to the needs of the municipality.

This first action will be centered on the two campuses and their connections with the city centre, since the trips to and from the university have an important weight in the matrix of daily trips and the student body is a sector of the population prone to traveling in more sustainable individual ways. , by its own socioeconomic characterization.

The proposed system will have physical stations, made up of a totem where the necessary procedures are carried out and physical anchorages for bicycles, all supported by a mobile app that facilitates its operation, adds the note.

This first phase is planned with 100 bicycles spread over 20 stations, each having anchorages and space for 10 bicycles.

This represents 20% of the optimal loan system for the entire town, serving its population.

The comprehensive planning of the basic municipal cycling network has 23 longitudinal kilometers and will connect the town with La Cuesta, the University campuses, the airport and Geneto, linking with those planned by the Cabildo and also connected to each other.

According to the City Council, the network will make possible not only the articulation of the main population centers of the municipality, but it will also enable comfortable and safe mobility by bicycle, with the aim that the existence of this cycling infrastructure modifies mobility patterns and improves the sustainability levels of the entire system.

Likewise, the area has the technical project for the first bike lane in the municipality, an itinerary of 4,337 longitudinal meters that will link the Las Peras path, in the town, with the Guajara classroom building.

This intervention will involve a comprehensive renovation throughout its scope, prioritizing the safety of cyclists and pedestrians, and will involve an investment of more than 440,000 euros, according to the City Council.
