Maspalomas proposes delaying the carnival until summer

The Maspalomas International Carnival, one of the most anticipated events of the year, could be held in the summer. This has been communicated from the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which yesterday organized a meeting to analyze the health situation and establish criteria regarding the celebration of this important event.

The decision has not yet been made, but it is the main option that will come down from the Consistory since Santa Cruz de Tenerife announced the new dates for its carnival in June. “We think it’s a alternative that would probably allow us to organize events in the street, which is what citizens are asking for and need right now,” says Irasema Hernández, Councilor for Celebrations.

Before specifying the final date, the administration has decided to form a work table to monitor week after week the contagion figures by coronavirus. “We are aware that we must announce the dates soon to negotiate the dates with the invited artists and to allow people who come to visit from outside to get their tickets on time,” says the mayor.

The political leader promises that they will inform about their final decision well in advance so that problems do not occur in this regard. “Even so, we want to take a few weeks to analyze if the curve is going down. We are in close contact with Health and they tell us that right now it is best to be cautious; we still do not have guarantees that we can do it in one or two months, so You have to be patient,” adds Hernández.

The carnival was scheduled to be held between February 25 and March 20 with acts that required entrance, so that a control of the capacity could be carried out. The decision of the City Council of Las Palmas to delay its carnival for two weeks put the southern town in check, which saw all its scheduled events overlap with those of the capital. However, this situation has also prompted a more thorough analysis by the administration of San Bartolomé de Tirajana regarding your event.

“We have realized that even if we carry out acts with limited capacity, many people would end up organizing on their own to celebrate the carnival in the street; we cannot risk something like this happening, that is why we believe that postponing it until summer, when it is possible that the situation is much better and there is the possibility of holding a carnival like always or similar, it would be more optimal too,” he explains.
