The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, approved at its meeting on Tuesday the promotion to the post of Lieutenant General of Division General Alejandro Escámez Fernández, current Head of the Canary Islands Command.
This appointment is included in Royal Decree 54/2022 of January 18 and published in the Official State Gazette number 16 this Wednesday.
Lieutenant General Escámez continues in his position as Chief of the Canary Islands Command, a position he has held since October 19, 2021, in addition to serving as Commander of the Land Operations Command (MOT) within the Permanent Operations structure of the Armed Forces. Armed.
Lieutenant General Alejandro Escámez was born in Madrid in 1961, is married and has two daughters.
Among its destinations are the ‘Tenerife’ 49th Infantry Regiment, the ‘Roger de Lauria’ II Parachute Flag, the Logistics School of the Army, the Directorate of Personnel Management and the Royal Guard.
From Lieutenant Colonel, he is assigned to the Defense Staff, performing tasks in the joint framework, and then returns to the Parachute Brigade to exercise Battalion Command.
As a Colonel, he was the Second Chief of the 6th ‘Almogávares’ Paratrooper Brigade, and as a brigadier general he held the post of General Secretary of the Land Army Personnel Command, later being assigned to the Land Force as Chief of the Mayor state.
After promotion to division general, he held the position of Commander General of Ceuta until his appointment as the new Chief of the Canary Islands Command, during which time he contributed in his geographical area to operations ‘Balmis’ and ‘Baluarte’ and in the management of the migratory crisis supporting the Security Forces and Bodies and the civil authorities, as well as the execution of the assigned tasks of preparation and surveillance and ground presence of the Ground Operational Command.
On October 19, 2021, he was appointed Chief of the Canary Islands Command, taking office on October 29 in a ceremony held at the Palace of the Captaincy General of the Canary Islands.
He is a paratrooper, has a diploma in Special Operations, Staff and, in addition to other national and international military courses, he took the NATO Defense Against Terrorism Course, the International Crisis Management Course by the Gutierrez Mellado Institute of Studies, the International Relations Course by the Society for International Studies (SEI/Juan Carlos I University) and the National Defense Course at the Higher Center for Defense Studies.
He has also participated in international missions, in Bosnia Herzegovina (1993) and twice in Afghanistan (2006 and 2010) and speaks English and French, concludes the statement from the Ministry of Defense.
