The Popular Party in the Cabildo accuses the island government of “putting in place mechanisms to prevent us from doing our opposition work.” It is highlighted by the counselor Valentín González, who bases himself on the fact that “throughout this mandate, we have verified how they avoid debating certain uncomfortable topics that we take to the plenary commissions.”
González Évora indicates that, “initially, the strategy was to amend all the proposals presented by the opposition, with the aim of distorting the original initiatives, stealing our right to propose actions from a different point of view.” The insular government – explains the counselor – “abandoned this sectarian practice”, after arduous discussions due to the discomfort in the political parties. This custom, he clarifies, “was replaced by procedural tricks to block responses or decision-making to questions and motions.”
González explains that “the last incident was carried out by the Minister of the Natural Environment (Isabel García)”. To a question and a motion about the material means and human resources to avoid the deterioration of the environment in natural spaces, “he answers us in writing that it is not his competence.” The counselor adds: “That, despite the fact that we have seen his statements about it in the press.” And he wonders: “Is it his responsibility to give explanations in the media, but not to offer them in collegiate government bodies?”
For the popular counselor, it is “inexplicable” that “a motion or question about the public use of natural spaces is not the responsibility of the Minister of Natural Environment.” It points to recent cases such as “the deterioration of Montaña Roja or the misuse in the Teide National Park due to the lack of human and material resources for its conservation, as well as the objective of raising public awareness.”
González concludes: “This government knows that it is weak and does not dare to debate in the Plenary Hall for fear, as has already happened, of losing votes. From the PP we urge you to recover the democratic tricks and not shy away from the debate.
