The coronavirus pandemic forces for the second consecutive year the neighborhood of La Florida, in La Orotava, to give up the traditional street distribution of its emblematic stew. The San Antonio Abad Festival of Traditions Association, chaired by Victoria Hernández and in charge of organizing this massive event, confirmed yesterday that they will opt again, as in 2021, for the house-to-house distribution of 350 boxes with the ingredients of this stew so that the stew is prepared again in the privacy of homes on the last Saturday of January.
The events, reduced due to the high incidence of coronavirus cases, will begin on January 25 and 26 with talks on liqueurs and old potatoes from Canary Islands. Both will be in the neighborhood association and will have capacity control. On Thursday 27, the XLII San Antonio Abad Wine Contest is organized, organized by the Regulatory Council of the Valle de La Orotava Denomination of Origin, the Villero City Council and the Tenerife Island Council.
On Saturday, January 29, the date on which the pot was to be distributed in the street, there will also be no livestock fair. El Puchero en Casa will begin to be organized between Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th with the distribution of the boxes around the neighbourhood. In total, it is planned to distribute 350 boxes with the basic ingredients of this stew: cabbage, chayotas, bubango, beans, potatoes and gofio, among others. There will also be no magician dance or pilgrimage.
The Mayor of Villero, Francisco Linares (CC), and the Delegate Councilor of the neighborhood, Delia Escobar (CC), received the representatives of the San Antonio Abad Festival of Traditions Association, Patricia Pérez and Loida Pacheco, at the town hall, who explained to the Local Government the details of the work carried out, the scheduled events and the format of the boxes that are going to be distributed so that La Florida smells like a stew on the 29th.
