The Angeles Alvariño ship travels to the Canary Islands to start its scientific work in 2022. The research ship of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) set sail on Tuesday from Vigo and is scheduled to arrive to the Port of Las Palmas on Saturday morningto. On Monday of next week, its first campaign of the year will begin in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The 2022 scientific program includes several campaigns focused on the Archipelago. In fact, the Ángeles Alvariño will remain in the waters of the Canary Islands until mid-March, when it will return to the Peninsula. The IEO ship will return to the Archipelago at the beginning of November.
The presence in the Archipelago of this ‘floating base’ of the IEO is common. Apart from the campaigns he carries out in the Islands, this past fall he participated in the scientific work related to the volcanic eruption that started in September on La Palma.
The scientific team traveling on board cIt proved the influence on marine ecosystems of the lava and the ship also provided assistance to the tanker that supplied water to the banana plantations in Puerto Naos. Months earlier, the work of the Ángeles Alvariño crew had been instrumental in clarifying the disappearance of the girls Anna and Olivia Zimmerman, murdered by their father, Tomás Gimeno, in a case of vicarious violence.
