Convert the Casa del Mar de Los Cristianos into the great social center of reference for the elderly of Arona and the South Region. That is the goal of the Arona City Council: to make a space available to citizens that offers activities and care for people with various ailments.

The Department of Works and Infrastructures, led by the mayor Leopoldo Díaz Oda, has already taken the first steps towards that direction, the comprehensive rehabilitation of the property, with the tender for the drafting service of the execution project and construction management for the adaptation of the edifice. This process is in its final phase and is budgeted at 74,700 euros (including taxes).

The project will involve the reform and rehabilitation of the building, in addition to the expansion of activities in the Casa del Mar, incorporating services and therapies to assist dependent elderly people with ailments such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. To this resource must be added the Residence for the Elderly of Los Cristianos. Both will make Arona a benchmark in the Southern Region in terms of caring for our elders.

For a time, a part of the building was used as a center for the carrying out of activities by this group. However, the rest of the property presented a significant state of abandonment, and the fact that it belonged to the State Government prevented the consistory from intervening in its comprehensive reform. This situation changed after the Arona City Council, after years of intense negotiations, managed to get the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Spain to give it the property for free, at the end of 2018.

Mayor

Mayor José Julián Mena highlights “the importance of giving impetus to a center that will deepen the character of Arona as the capital of the South, taking a huge step in caring for our elders with quality, modern facilities, which are they are sure to be a reference in the region. It allows us to continue advancing in the quality of the services provided by the City Council, generating new public spaces for the residents of Arona, in a bid to generate investments for the municipality. La Casa del Mar is going to mark a before and after for the elders of Arona ”.

Start of the procedure to create the Municipal Housing Council

The Housing Area of the Arona City Council begins the procedure for the creation of the first Municipal Housing Council, with which it wants to respond to the challenge of complying with the constitutional right of everyone to access a decent home, while betting for medium and long-term planning that consolidates a quality public housing policy. This Housing Council, which is part of a policy of active participation of all social, economic and political agents, with the consensus of all municipal groups, will have an advisory, informative, advisory and proposal nature.

It will be the participation body of the Arona City Council for the promotion of initiatives related to the planning and management of municipal housing policies.

This initiative is just a sample of the work that has been carried out by the Housing Area, directed by councilor Leopoldo Díaz Oda, and that in recent weeks has resulted, for example, in an agreement with the public company Visocan for the purchase of bank homes and allocate them to social rents, or the recent resolution of fifty files of aid for the reform of houses to residents of this southern municipality, with a subsidy that exceeds, in total, 157,000 euros.
