Santa Cruz announces on Monday the “reordering” of dates for a Carnival that is already late

The next January 28 should start the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with the presentation of candidates, and the immediate start of the first contests. However, the current health situation, which has led to the paralysis of the trials, which will prevent the groups from being ready for the scheduled dates, as well as the increasing number of COVID infections, which discourages any type of show that is accompanied by thousands of attendees in closed venues, has put the capital city council in the position of having to “reorganize” the carnival calendar. This was announced yesterday by the mayor of Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello, who confirmed that it will be this coming Monday when the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, along with the councilman himself, will meet with the groups

Carnival, through a meeting through the zoom platform to communicate your proposal.
The mayor of Fiestas did not want to anticipate what that proposal will be, although he did point out that it will be novel and will give much to talk about. “We will do a different approach, reordering all the contests and galas,” he added.

Cabello also announced that he will advance to the groups some of the readjustments in which the Autonomous Party Organization is working throughout this week, so that everyone next Monday has an outline of what the City Council wants to do with this Carnival 2022 .

Yesterday, the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Augusto Hidalgo, made public the decision to delay the Carnival for two weeks, so that it will take place from February 25 to March 20 “due to the high rate of COVID-19 infections ”. As indicated by the Consistory, these 15 days of delay will make the party last until March 20, after a decision “made in the current context of positive cases” and that comes after a meeting of the team that works in the organization of these holidays, “who has positively valued the movement on the party board.”

In the case of Santa Cruz, what seems clear is that there will be no Carnival in the street. Although the epidemiological situation improves, mass celebrations are totally ruled out by the Party Department.

In other parts of Spain with a carnival tradition such as Cádiz, they have chosen to move their contests to spring, thus avoiding their celebration on the usual dates, given the high incidence that is still expected due to the COVID pandemic, in a way that go until the month of June.
