In 2010, the Tenerife-based Luz Sánchez Aguilar founded Pendientera, a brand of accessories with a clear objective: to make each piece unique, sustainable, and original. Fifteen years later, she has achieved, among other milestones, having some of her pieces showcased on leading television programmes, all while adhering to a philosophy that champions equality.
Sustainability and Equality
The commitment to sustainable and recyclable materials has always been a goal for Pendientera. To uphold this commitment to sustainability, they always aim to reuse acrylic waste from the construction industry whenever possible.
For the past four years, they have also incorporated bioplastic (cellulose acetate), a bioplastic made from agricultural by-products such as maize, sugarcane, and wheat. “Cellulose acetate is biodegradable, ensuring all our designs are sustainable; even more so as they are produced in very limited series or on demand.”
While they create accessories from other materials, their main lines are based on acrylic and bioplastic.
Pendientera’s Rise to Television
It has become common to see Pendientera accessories on some of the most popular television shows. Cristina Pedroche, Lalachus, and Alba Carrillo are just a few presenters who have worn them on programmes like Bake Off and Zapeando.
In the early days, Luz entered the world of social media alongside the boom of fashion blogs: “Now, for example, I collaborate with the stylists from Zapeando. Well-known figures such as the Terremoto de Alcorcón have also worn my designs.”
Genderless Fashion with Inclusive Sizing
The interests of this Tenerife illustrator have led her to venture into the fashion world with the same goals as her accessories.
“The clothing is designed and printed in Tenerife, using water-based inks and certified with OEKO-TEX: “These are our own prints advocating for fashion that is genderless and offers a wide range of sizes. We believe inclusive and agender fashion are core values of Pendientera.”
This facet of fashion has earned Luz (Pendientera) recognition at the Cuerpos de Orgullo festival, held in El Sauzal from 17 to 30 September, where she received the Itziar Castro Award for Corpodisident Visibility in Fashion: “I was particularly thrilled because I advocate for agender fashion and visibility for all body types. Itziar was one of Pendientera’s most important ambassadors…”
Her fashion pieces, intended for customers to try on at the location, are exclusively sold at Nanai in La Laguna, where the accessories are also available. These can additionally be purchased at the following locations: La Cala in Puerto de la Cruz, Librería Barco de Papel in El Sauzal, Librería de Mujeres, and May Green Collective in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Galería Vegueta in Gran Canaria, and Andrágora on the island of La Palma.
