The municipality has seen a 44% increase in domestic oil recycling, a 5% rise in glass recycling, an 18% cumulative growth in lightweight packaging, and a 14% increase in paper and cardboard in 2025 thus far.
La Laguna has taken significant strides in sustainability, reflected in the positive evolution of its recycling statistics across all major categories. Between January and August 2025, the collection of domestic oil has surged by 44%. Glass recycling has also improved by 5% in the first seven months of the year, confirming a growth trend.
Municipal Commitment to Sustainability
Fran Hernández, the Councillor for Municipal Services, emphasised that “these results are the product of the awareness shown by our residents, who demonstrate their commitment to initial separation and to a more sustainable urban model. La Laguna is making firm strides towards an environmentally responsible future.”
In terms of lightweight packaging, the municipality has increased its average contribution from 11.7 kg per inhabitant in 2024 to 13 kg per inhabitant in 2025, representing an increase of over 11%. La Laguna’s performance is notably better than that of larger cities, such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which concluded 2024 with 11.2 kg per inhabitant.
Paper and Cardboard Collection
The collection of paper and cardboard also reflects this upward trend. In 2025, the contribution has reached 15.7 kg per inhabitant, compared to 14.3 kg per inhabitant the previous year. This figure surpasses the average for the Canary Islands, which is 1.2 kg lower.
“Recycling facilities are now available in all towns and neighbourhoods within the municipality, ensuring equal access to collection points for all residents,” Hernández highlighted. “Our aim is to continue expanding resources, awareness campaigns, and services so that every action counts towards achieving a more sustainable city.”
Plans for Continued Improvement
The growth in recycling figures not only reflects the efforts of La Laguna households but also the planning by the Town Hall to extend services to all areas of the municipality. Improvements in textile collections, the consolidation of glass recycling, and advances in packaging and paper and cardboard are indicators of established changing habits.
With these results, La Laguna positions itself as one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the Canary Islands in terms of citizen contributions to recycling, surpassing the regional average in paper and cardboard while making significant improvements in lightweight packaging, with expectations to maintain this trend by year-end.
