Heidelberg Volkswagen Sports Club Wins Canary Islands Sports Award 2025

Heidelberg Volkswagen Wins the 2025 Premio al Deporte Canario After Securing the Superliga Title

The Heidelberg Volkswagen Sports Club has been awarded the Canary Islands Sports Award 2025 in the category of Best Team, recognising their remarkable achievement in becoming champions of the women’s volleyball Super League this summer. This accomplishment comes just three seasons after their debut at the elite level and has emerged as one of the most significant milestones in recent Canary Islands sports history.

The recognition will be presented on 3rd October in Tenerife during the ceremony of the Canary Islands Sports Awards as part of ExpoDeca 2025. The selection was made by a jury comprised of specialised journalists from the Archipelago.

From Grassroots to Elite

The Heidelberg Volkswagen project originated on the courts of Colegio Heidelberg, where sports were an integral part of education. Over the years, the club has developed a robust structure, evolving into a professional entity capable of competing at the highest level.

“Heidelberg Volkswagen epitomises the ideal example of a club that has successfully grown from grassroots to the elite in record time,” emphasised Poli Suárez, the Councillor for Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Canary Islands Government. According to Suárez, this award also serves as recognition for women’s sports and the excellent current state of volleyball in the islands.

A Historic Final Against Menorca

The championship was achieved after a thrilling final against Avarca de Menorca, decided over four matches (3-1) with a standout performance from setter Patricia Aranda, who was named MVP of the series. The Canary Islanders dominated at home in the first two matches, faced a setback in Ciutadella, but ultimately sealed the series in the Balearic Islands, confirming their competitive maturity. This victory marked the pinnacle of a meteoric rise that began in 2022 with a historic promotion, now culminating in championships.

Runners-up in the Cup and European Debut

The Gran Canaria team also competed in their first final of the Copa de SM La Reina in February 2025, once again against Avarca de Menorca. Although they lost 3-1, that defeat served as a precursor to their success in the Super League. The club president, Aurelio Espinosa, noted that this recognition “comes at the best sporting moment, not only due to what has been achieved by the first team, but also for all that it represents for the organisation.” He also highlighted the immediate challenge ahead: their debut in the qualifying phase of the Champions League, a decisive step towards establishing Heidelberg on the international scene.

The Rise of Canary Islands Volleyball

Heidelberg’s success adds to the achievements of CV Guaguas, JAV Olímpico, and Haris, which have placed Canary Islands volleyball among the most competitive in Spain. This award, beyond its symbolic value, confirms the strength of a sport enjoying a golden era in the islands. The Canary Islands Sports Award 2025 will thus serve as the crowning achievement of an unforgettable season for Heidelberg Volkswagen, which has ascended from classrooms to the pinnacle of Spanish volleyball in just three years.
