Autumn and Garden
–José Ángel Buesa —
Madam, it is twilight. It does not matter if a new bud
has opened in the garden’s rosebushes; it is now:
the dreadful twilight of autumn has arrived,
which means a twilight that lasts all day.
Madam, it is autumn… Your last roses
are being discarded by some unknown despondency.
Indeed, there is an autumn for all things,
and love and life slip away with the wind.
Understand, madam: nothing will come from the dew,
not even tears. Everything will be in vain;
for there is nothing sadder than a late bud,
and love is but a handful of ash…
