Canaries Faces Extreme Weather Conditions
The Canary Islands are experiencing a day characterised by extreme temperatures, persistent haze, and a new yellow warning issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). For Thursday, 18 September, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 34°C in several islands, particularly in inland areas and mid-altitudes.
High UV Radiation Risk
In addition, there is a very high risk of ultraviolet (UV) radiation across all municipalities in the archipelago. This situation is set to persist, according to Aemet, until Sunday, 22 September. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution outdoors, especially during the peak hours of the day.
UV Radiation and Heat
UV radiation levels will reach a very high risk across the Canaries. The use of sun protection, sunglasses, hats, and lightweight clothing is essential, along with avoiding direct sunlight exposure between 12:00 and 17:00.
In terms of heat, Aemet warns of temperatures exceeding 34°C in much of the archipelago, with tropical nights where minimums will not drop below 25 or 26°C in mid-altitudes and inland areas.
Haze and Potential Storms
The haze at altitude will particularly affect mid-altitude regions and southern peaks, although it is expected to diminish in the afternoon. Furthermore, during the peak hours, storms with occasional showers may develop in the interior of several islands. Winds will be light, with an easterly component, intensifying along the coasts of the eastern province. In the mountains, the southerly wind will contribute to heat accumulation in elevated areas.
