The new bus lane in Tenerife will span two and a half kilometres, cost 12 million euros, and accommodate over 25,000 passengers daily. This new bus lane will be constructed in one of the most congested areas of the roads: the segment of the North motorway (TF-5) running from the University Hospital of Canarias (HUC) to the Guajara campus of the University of La Laguna.
A project titled Extension of the TF-5 Northbound Bus Lane Phase II is already in public exhibition, initiated by the Cabildo of Tenerife, to be reviewed by administrations, businesses, social groups, and citizens.
Expansion
The bus lane will be added to the road that runs parallel to the North motorway, linking the hospital centre in La Laguna and the university campus. This will connect with another lane that was opened in 2022 between the campus located in Las Chumberas and La Laguna station.
With the addition of these two initiatives, a dedicated route primarily for public transport vehicles from Titsa will span 4.2 kilometres, which will reduce travel time for buses and improve one of the areas contributing most to the notorious traffic jams on the TF-5.
The project’s details can be reviewed following its publication on Wednesday, 17 September 2025, in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP). The primary objective is stated as being “the improvement of public transport access between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna to avoid the buses being affected by heavy traffic in this section of the North motorway.

The new bus lane will include a false tunnel to allow Titsa vehicles to bypass the Guajara roundabout. Additionally, it will feature new branches for future expansions, as well as improvements to rainwater drainage, signage, and landscaping.
The plan also includes the construction of a new bus stop next to the Santiago Martín Pavilion, which will be accessible via a ramp from the lower street, enhancing public transport accessibility for users.
Simultaneously, the access ramp to the motorway will be restored, and the pedestrian walkway in Las Chumberas will be upgraded, thereby improving connectivity and safety for pedestrians. The project has been drafted by Proyma Consultores and has received a favourable report from the Technical Service of Roads and Mobility of the Cabildo.
Landscape Improvement
Finally, landscape integration measures will be implemented, involving the replacement and relocation of affected vegetation, ensuring the work harmonizes properly with its natural and urban surroundings.

The urban developments in La Laguna and its University (ULL) were carried out without considering traffic management and the need to avoid bottlenecks, particularly concerning the North motorway (TF-5) and its surroundings, which are linked to both the city and the educational centre. This is one of the conclusions drawn from a 2023 survey conducted by the ULL that concerns the area in which this bus lane will be developed.
A Black Spot
This study highlights that the facilities housing much of the university’s activity – the campuses of Guajara, Anchieta, and Central – are located right at two of the points with the worst congestion on the TF-5 as it passes through La Laguna: access to the major shopping centres in Las Chumberas and the Padre Anchieta roundabout, which connects to La Laguna city and the municipality of El Rosario. This roundabout is currently undergoing construction work aimed precisely at reducing congestion.
In addition to completed actions, such as the new links to La Esperanza road and the segment of the bus lane between Guajara campus and the La Laguna bus station, other initiatives are underway to address these black spots, including the new pedestrian bridge in Anchieta, the staggered entry of ULL students, the shuttle buses, and the very extension of the bus lane from Guajara to the HUC, which has now entered public information.
