The initiative belongs to the ‘La Laguna, Naturally Safe’ project, aimed at preparing the population for natural hazards.
The historic convent of Santo Domingo in La Laguna has been chosen as the venue for the first training session of the Geological Risk Conferences, which was completed with a high degree of satisfaction among both attendees and organisers. Approximately 80 individuals participated in these informative sessions, organised by the Canary Islands Volcanology Association, with support from the local council.
These presentations were complemented by field visits and various experiences in multiple natural settings throughout the municipality, from the 8th to the 13th of September. During these activities, various Earth science experts provided essential insights on how to understand and respond to geological phenomena that could impact the municipality.
This training session, lasting a total of 20 hours, combined theoretical and practical methodologies with a strong interactive element. Theoretical knowledge was provided to understand the characteristics and origins of geological phenomena, alongside practical scenarios to apply the learned theory. One of the most appreciated sessions was a virtual simulation exercise to prepare for a volcanic eruption near Tenerife North Airport. Attendees assumed different roles in a role-playing game to monitor the phenomenon and implement preventive measures during the ongoing eruption.
This practical exercise aimed to help attendees grasp and experience the challenges and responsibilities involved in managing a high-impact natural phenomenon. Participants assumed various roles including politicians, scientists, responders, security personnel, healthcare workers, journalists, and citizens, each playing a crucial part during the emergency.
The conference concluded with a guided geological tour around the Mesa Mota area, designed to teach participants how to observe and recognise the volcanic morphology surrounding the municipality and to analyse the challenges of territory management during a natural emergency. The ‘La Laguna, Naturally Safe’ project is already preparing for its next training event: the Technical Conferences on Geological Risks for Responders, scheduled for the 6th to the 10th of October 2025. Details regarding the programme and registration process will soon be available on the Canary Islands Volcanology Association’s website at www.volcanesdecanarias.org.
Canary Islands Volcanology Association
The Canary Islands Volcanology Association was established in 2011 and is a national citizen entity registered with the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. Its headquarters are located in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This non-profit citizen collective has been working since 2004 to enhance the volcanic culture of the Canary Islands.
Its volunteers work entirely altruistically to inform and educate comprehensively and rigorously about volcanic activity in the Canary Islands and beyond. Furthermore, their efforts also include disseminating information and advice on how to address other natural phenomena affecting our islands. More information about this association and its activities can be found on their website www.volcanesdecanarias.org or by following them on major social media platforms.
