Childcare Vouchers Available for Families on the Island
More than 6,000 families on the island who stand to benefit from the childcare vouchers provided by the Cabildo can apply now until 31 October. This initiative is aimed at children in Early Childhood Education (ages 0 to 3) with the objective of supporting the reconciliation of family and work life during the school year. The Corporation allocates €1,350,000 to this program, which can increase up to €2,000,000 if necessary. Each voucher will amount to a maximum of €800 per beneficiary.
Support for Essential Expenses
The childcare voucher will help families cover essential costs such as enrolment fees, care services, hygiene, meals, and school clothing, while also allowing them the freedom to choose their childcare facility. Families with children enrolled in the first cycle of Early Childhood Education at centres authorised by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands will be eligible for these grants. The family’s economic situation will be the primary criteria for evaluation.
Statements from Officials
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, stated that these grants represent a firm commitment to equal opportunities and support for families. With this initiative, “we want to ensure that no one is left behind for economic reasons and that all families can balance their work and personal lives with assurance.” She emphasised that this support “provides relief for many families who make significant efforts to cover the costs of early education.” Furthermore, she noted that last year’s call received 2,034 applications, which is a 36% increase compared to the previous year.
Boosting Employment in Education
The councillor for Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, added that this not only assists families but also promotes job creation in the educational sector and strengthens the network of nurseries on the island. Investing in education for children aged 0 to 3 is a commitment to a fairer social model, where reconciliation and genuine equality of opportunity become a reality. He pointed out that “these grants enable many mothers and fathers to return to the labour market with greater peace of mind.”
