Canary Islands Set for High Temperatures and Fire Risk
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the Canary Islands could reach temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius in inland areas this Tuesday. A very high risk of ultraviolet radiation is expected across all municipalities in the archipelago until 19th September.
Fire Alert Declared
On Monday, the Government of the Canary Islands declared a fire risk alert for El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. In Gran Canaria, this alert is applicable at elevations above 400 metres.
Maritime Conditions
At sea, winds are expected from the northeast at speeds of 5 or 6, locally reaching 7, while the northeast may experience winds of 3 or 4. The sea will be moderate to rough, with swells from the north or northeast of 1 to 2 metres. In the eastern coastline, conditions will be variable with waves between 1 to 3 metres and choppy waters.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura Forecast
In Lanzarote, generally clear skies are expected, with some cloud intervals in the north during the late hours. Dust from the Saharan region will be notable in the atmosphere, particularly during the latter part of the day. The temperatures are likely to remain stable or rise slightly, reaching between 30 and 32 degrees in the southern areas. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with strong intervals in the southern interior, and occasional very strong gusts are possible overnight.
In Fuerteventura, mostly clear skies are anticipated, with medium and high cloud cover appearing towards the end of the day. Dust will be more pronounced in the latter half of the day, with temperatures potentially reaching 32 to 34 degrees in southern inland areas. The wind will be moderate from the northeast, with strong intervals, particularly on the southern slopes of Jandía, where overnight gusts may also be exceptionally strong.
Conditions on Other Islands
In Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro, predominantly clear skies will be observed, with some cloud cover along northern coastlines and varying levels of medium to high clouds depending on the island and time of day. Dust will affect mid and high elevations, becoming more significant in the afternoon on certain islands.
Temperatures are expected to see a slight to moderate rise, reaching up to 36 degrees in inland Gran Canaria and 34 degrees in the midlands of Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro, depending on specific locations. Winds will be moderate from the northeast with strong intervals in certain slopes and peaks, alongside possible very strong gusts overnight and in the early morning, with breezy conditions on some coasts.
