The programme includes new teaching guides and practical workshops with artisans to promote creativity, sustainability, and the transmission of popular culture among students.
The Ibero-American Craft Museum of Tenerife (MAIT), part of the Cabildo of Tenerife, reinforces its commitment to education and cultural heritage dissemination with the launch of the Educational School Plan for 2025-2026. The programme, aimed at all educational levels, includes guided tours of the museum, educational workshops, and activities within schools, with the goal of allowing students on the island to understand, appreciate, and engage with traditional crafts of the Canary Islands, in conjunction with Ibero-American craftsmanship.
Efraín Medina, the Councillor for Employment and Education, remarks that, “The Cabildo of Tenerife continues to champion education as a tool for social transformation, awareness, and social cohesion. Craftsmanship not only represents our identity and our past but also offers future opportunities linked to sustainability, innovation, and employment.”
He also emphasises the museum’s role as a learning space, stating, “MAIT is a privileged location for knowledge transmission. A museum is meaningless if it does not succeed in communicating, inspiring, and educating. With this programme, we strengthen the bond between culture, tradition, and education.”
Main Innovations for 2025-2026
This year, the MAIT’s educational activities will feature a new educational resource: “The Crafts of MAIT,” which comprises Teaching Guides focused on two traditional crafts: Traditional Pottery in Tenerife and Percussion Musical Instruments. Additionally, two new traditional crafts will be introduced for schools, targeting students from secondary education onwards: Palm Weaving and Percussion Musical Instruments. Lastly, a variant on the theme of Natural Dyes will be offered through a workshop that will involve creating calligraphic/watercolour ink from cochineal.
A Comprehensive Educational Offering
The educational programme is structured around two main pillars:
1. Museum-based Education (La Orotava) including guided tours tailored to each educational stage with the possibility of focusing on a specific theme or craft. Practical workshops include Toy Making, Ceramics, Jewellery, Doll Making, Natural Dyes, Traditional Pottery, Masks, among others.
2. School-based Education, featuring Craft Days with live demonstrations and practical workshops led by master artisans.
