Operation Silbo Uncovers Major Drug Trafficking Network in Santa Cruz
Ongoing Investigations
The recently launched Operation Silbo in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to combat drug trafficking has revealed significant developments. A total of 28 individuals are currently under investigation, with one person on the run. As reported this Saturday morning, 13 of these individuals are in provisional custody, while another seven have been released under precautionary measures. Six others are still giving statements, pending a judicial decision.
Charges and Profiles
The suspects are being investigated for alleged offences against public health, money laundering, and belonging to a criminal organisation. The majority of those under investigation are Canary Island residents (21), along with two Latin Americans, three from mainland Spain, one North African, and one individual from Eastern Europe. Of the 20 individuals who testified yesterday in Court Number 3 of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 13 are in custody, and seven have been provisionally released, most of whom are subject to precautionary measures such as passport confiscation or travel restrictions, as reported by the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC).
Details of the Operation
Among those arrested are a hospitality entrepreneur, a lawyer, and a tax advisor, according to local media outlets. Arrests occurred not only in Santa Cruz de Tenerife but also in La Gomera and Galicia. Operation Silbo commenced early on Wednesday with a significant police presence, including the use of a helicopter, and involved searches of various properties in the Tenerife capital by the Guardia Civil and the Customs office of the Tax Agency.
