Sun, Sand, and Surf: The Ultimate Guide to Tenerife’s Top Beaches

Tenerife is undeniably a sun-lover’s paradise. Stretching out off the coast of Spain, it’s part of the Canary Islands and blessed with a climate that pretty much promises sunshine all year round. If you’re dreaming of beach days filled with golden sand, refreshing dips in the sea, and maybe even a bit of adventure, this island has loads to offer. But, well, choosing where to go can feel a bit overwhelming—there are so many beaches, each with their own vibe.

I thought I’d put together a little guide to help sort through the options. Hopefully, it’s a good starting point whether you’re after somewhere lively or a quieter spot to unwind.

Playa de las Teresitas

First up is Playa de las Teresitas, which often pops up as a favourite. It’s quite unique because it isn’t a natural beach in the usual sense. The sand was imported from the Sahara, giving it this soft, pale look that contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the ocean. It’s quite something to see. Unlike some of the island’s black sand beaches, which we’ll get to, this one feels more like the “classic” beach you’d picture in a postcard.

The beach is sheltered and relatively calm, which makes it great for swimming, especially if you’re with kids. There are palm trees along the promenade, and a handful of cafés and restaurants nearby. On the downside, it can get busy in peak season, but I guess that’s a mark of its popularity.

Playa Jardín

Then there’s Playa Jardín — a bit darker because the sand is volcanic black. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but it’s surprisingly beautiful. Designed by an artist, the gardens around the beach add a splash of greenery, which contrasts nicely with the black sand and the ocean. It feels a bit more local and less touristy compared to some other spots.

The waves here can be a bit stronger, so it’s popular with surfers or those just wanting to feel a bit more of a sea breeze. If you’re not too keen on sunbathing on black sand—which some might find hotter underfoot—there’s plenty of space on the rocks or grass nearby.

Playa de la Tejita

For those who want something a little less developed, Playa de la Tejita might be more your cup of tea. It’s one of the largest natural beaches on Tenerife, with no large hotels or loud bars right on the sand. It’s just… well, quite raw and beautiful in its simplicity. The volcanic hills in the background give it a dramatic touch.

It’s also worth noting that this beach tends to attract a bit of a free-spirited crowd, and yes, there is a nudist section. So if that’s not your vibe, you might want to steer clear of the far ends of the beach. But overall, it feels very peaceful, and it’s perfect if you want to feel like you’ve escaped the usual tourist trail.

Playa del Duque

If you’re after something a bit more upmarket and polished, Playa del Duque is definitely worth a mention. It’s got a more refined feel with clean, golden sand, clear waters, and a promenade lined with chic restaurants and shops. It’s the kind of place where you might see people enjoying a leisurely coffee or cocktail, rather than just a quick snack.

I suppose it’s a bit pricier around here, but sometimes it’s nice to treat yourself. And despite its sophistication, the beach still feels welcoming rather than intimidating. Also, there are good facilities for families and accessibility, which is always a plus.

Playa de Benijo

Lastly, I’ll mention Playa de Benijo—one of those spots that feels like a bit of a secret, though it’s becoming better known. It’s up in the north, more remote and surrounded by dramatic cliffs. The landscape is… well, quite wild, I’d say. The beach is mostly black volcanic sand with large rocks and powerful waves, making it a favourite for photographers or those who just want to soak in some raw natural beauty.

It’s definitely not a sunbathing hotspot, more a place to walk, explore, and enjoy the ruggedness of Tenerife’s northern coast. Oh, and don’t underestimate the sunsets here—they’re pretty special.

A Quick Note on Safety and Etiquette

Before heading off to any of Tenerife’s beaches, it’s worth keeping in mind the usual safety tips. Some beaches, especially those with strong currents or big waves, aren’t ideal for inexperienced swimmers. Lifeguards are present on many of the popular beaches, but not all.

Also, practicing respect for the environment is important. Tenerife’s natural beauty is part of its charm, so keeping beaches clean and being mindful of local wildlife makes a big difference, even if it sounds a bit obvious.

So, there you have it—a bit of a rundown on Tenerife’s top beaches. It’s quite a mixed bag, really. Depending on what you want, you’ll find everything from calm and family-friendly to wild and windswept. Maybe it’s worth trying a couple of different spots while you’re there, just to get a better feel for the island’s coastal charm. After all, beaches aren’t just about sand and sea—they’re about the whole vibe, aren’t they?
