La Laguna Unveils Programme and Poster for the 2025 Cristo Festival

This year’s poster features the signature of local artist Nareme Melián.

The planned agenda will run from 4 to 21 September, featuring performances by groups and artists such as José Vélez, Edwin Rivera, Love of Lesbian, Antonia San Juan and Marilia Monzón.

The main façade of La Laguna Town Hall hosted the presentation of the poster and the official programme for the Santísimo Cristo 2025 on Wednesday, 27 August. This year’s agenda will include over fifty cultural, religious, sporting, and popular events taking place in the city between 4 and 21 September.

The launch of these festivities involved the participation of La Laguna Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, the councilor for Local Festivities Dailos González, the leading figure of the Cristo, Eladio Alexis Díaz, the rector of the Sanctuary, Víctor Álvarez, and the artist Nareme Melián, who created the official poster for this celebration.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez highlighted “the greatness of this festival, which is part of the intangible heritage of our city and has provided lasting memories for many generations of locals who have participated in these events since childhood.”

“This spirit has driven us to strengthen the most representative events of the Cristo and to revive actions from the past that remain in our collective memory but should not fade with time. A clear example is the announcing parade that will pay homage to the old Battle of Flowers, which used to parade through the historical centre, and will return this year with the support of local groups,” added the mayor.

In conclusion, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez explained that a programme has been designed for all ages, with particular attention to events like the Festival of the Elderly on 8 September and the three Saturdays of the Children’s Fair (6, 13, and 20 September), which will ensure fun and surprises for the youngest members of the family.

For his part, Dailos González began his remarks by acknowledging “the involvement of groups, entities, associations, and individuals who contribute each year to the enhancement of the most important celebrations in our city, which are a true reflection of our history and tradition.” He then announced that the agenda will officially kick off on Thursday, 4 September, with the proclamation, which this year will be delivered by an iconic institution, the Club Baloncesto Canarias.

“From that moment on, a comprehensive programme will be introduced, bringing prominent national and international artists and groups to the city, including José Vélez, Estrellas de Buenavista Social Club, Love of Lesbian, Edwin Rivera, Marilia Monzón, and Locoplaya, among other notable names,” mentioned the municipal representative.

This edition will also feature cherished events such as the XLVII Festival Sabandeño on 6 September, the concert by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra on 7 September, the IV Inclusive Fair on 10 September, the performance by Los Cantadores on 12 September, the Pandorga and the Caballitos de Fuego parade along with the Night of Traditions on 13 September, and the Night of Humour on 17 September, featuring Abubukaka and Antonia San Juan.

Religious and devotional activities

Eladio Alexis Díaz, the leading figure of the Cristo, was responsible for outlining the religious events that mark this celebration, including the descent ceremony and the procession transporting the image of the Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna to La Catedral (9 September) and the celebration of the Eucharist and the return procession scheduled for Sunday, 14 September.

Composition of the official poster

Local artist Nareme Melián explained the creation process of this year’s official poster, stating, “I wanted to revisit the aesthetics and origins of this image, giving absolute prominence to the sculpture, particularly its left profile, which is not commonly highlighted in portraits and photographs.”

“Over the past months, I have been able to view the sculpture up close, and it has communicated a profound beauty to me, stemming from its simplicity in technique and process. This working methodology inspired me to incorporate everyday elements, such as the iconic BIC pens, combined with watercolour, to draft this poster,” the artist elaborated.

“As a local from Punta del Hidalgo, it is an honour for me to take on this responsibility, and for that reason, I wanted to reflect what these festivals mean for the entire municipality, using the representative green of Anaga, the blue symbolising our coastline, and the red associated with the passion of Christ,” he concluded.

Commitment to sport

The Fiestas del Cristo 2025 will feature a prominent sporting component with events such as the XLIV Popular Race del Cristo on 6 September, various stages of the LXV Vuelta Ciclista a Tenerife passing through the city, or the Echo Hy-Race 2k25 and the Mixed Basketball Tournament of the Fiestas (both on 13 September). The day on 20 September will be highlighted by the 25th BMX Trophy, the XXXIV Ciudad de La Laguna Table Tennis Tournament, and the Boxing Gala for the Fiestas del Cristo. The following day, the Institutional Wrestling for the Fiestas del Cristo 2025 will take the stage.

The presentation event concluded with a musical performance by the Agrupación Folclórica Hermanos Rodríguez de Milán, which will be honoured this year at the Night of Traditions.

Throughout this week, the full programme for the Fiestas del Cristo 2025, including dates, locations, and detailed information about each event, will be made available on the La Laguna Town Hall website and the municipal social media profiles.
