Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Announcement of Spain’s Largest Christmas Tree Sparks Controversy

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council recently announced that it will feature the largest Christmas tree in Spain and has commenced the installation of festive lighting as early as August.

According to Diario de Avisos, the Councillor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, asserted that “the Mayor of Vigo will have to come to Santa Cruz.” He further stated that the structure will reach a height of 50 metres and will be located in Plaza de España.

The City Council will invest €100,000 in the rental of the structure, which will be managed by a specialist company.

Socialist councillor Tino Guzman has expressed his discontent with the Council’s decision. He remarked, “Santa Cruz cuts down real trees in the Rambla… but don’t worry, we will put up a 50-metre tree for Christmas at the cost of €100,000 in rent. The greenery disappears, but the LEDs remain,” he posted on his X account.

This decision has sparked a wave of criticism on social media. One user noted, “Santa Cruz de Tenerife will have the largest Christmas tree in Spain. We have set aside our priorities; a tree matters more.”

Another user commented, “Santa Cruz is dirty, the bike lane is closed, and the flea market has been moved from the centre to the outskirts… But the magical solution is a 50-metre Christmas tree.” Yet another collective questioned, “Surely there were more pressing needs for the citizens than spending €100,000 on a Christmas tree?”
