The Civil Guard is investigating a 27-year-old man from Güímar who allegedly defrauded three acquaintances by posing as a cryptocurrency investor after reconnecting with them through social media.
The suspect approached people he already knew, former schoolmates or sports acquaintances, informing them that he was investing in cryptocurrencies and reaping significant profits.
Having gained the victims’ trust, he requested money to supposedly invest on their behalf, according to sources from the armed institute.
When they transferred the money, the accused sent them data on the alleged profits, all to further earn their trust and ask for more money under the pretext of increasing those profits even further.
When the victims requested their invested money and the profits made, they began to receive excuses until the accused stopped responding to calls and messages, at which point they realised they had been scammed.
The proceedings have been forwarded to the competent judicial authority.
