Unusual Shark Sighting in Arona, Tenerife

Arona (Tenerife) experienced an unusual scene on its shores this Friday.

Bathers enjoying the afternoon at Playa de Las Vistas, one of the most popular beaches in the south of the island, were taken by surprise when a shark was spotted near the shore. This was captured in a video that has gone viral on social media.

The recording, published on TikTok by the user @valeriadepomar, reveals the exact moment when the animal—just a few metres from the sand—captured the attention of dozens of onlookers who gathered around, feeling a mixture of surprise and curiosity.

A Man’s Intervention

The footage also shows a man holding the shark by its tail, presumably to prevent it from being trapped or stranded on the shore.

While the species of the shark has not been officially confirmed, the scene has prompted discussions about how to respond in such situations.

There have been no reports of the shark causing any incidents, nor did municipal safety or emergency services activate any protocols.

Recommendations in Such Cases

From environmental groups and marine experts, the advice in the presence of a shark along the coast is to remain calm, avoid approaching the animal, and alert the authorities or lifeguards to assess the situation and act accordingly.

Although these sightings are not common, they are not exceptional either and usually occur due to occasional disorientation or currents that lead the sharks into shallow waters.
