The municipality of Arona declared yesterday a day of official mourning for the death, at the age of 98, of Eduardo Oramas Alayón, a benchmark as a teacher of traditional Canarian games, especially stick and hand, whose conservation and dissemination actively contributed to pass on to several generations.
The City Council had awarded him the Gold Medal of the municipality and he had been decorated as Illustrious Son of Tenerife. Coincidentally, his death occurred at the time when several City Council workers placed the sign with his name, after the Council approved it, on the façade of the Civic Center of El Fraile, the population center where he had resided for years. José Julián Mena, mayor of Aronero, highlighted his charisma and the “enormous affection” that he generated among the neighbors. “A part of our legacy and our cultural heritage is leaving, but the seed that sowed during decades of tireless work to preserve part of our roots remains,” said the councilor.
“He was a wise man full of vitality who will be remembered by future generations who love our native sports,” José Alberto Delgado, Councilor for Historical Heritage, told this newspaper, who stressed that “Don Eduardo was always where they called him, whether it was a school or any neighborhood association, when it came to spreading our traditions. “

The flags in the municipal public buildings waved yesterday at half-staff and all official events organized by the City Council were suspended. The decree approved by the Consistory recommends keeping a minute of silence in all sporting activities held in the municipality.
The funeral of Eduardo Oramas Alayón, a native of San Miguel de Abona, will take place today at 1.30 p.m. from room number 1 of the Tenerife Sur mortuary, in Parque La Reina. His mortal remains will then be transferred to the Arona cemetery.
