The Cabildo de Tenerife announced on Wednesday that it will expand the demand-responsive transport service to five new areas of the Island, with a budget of £2.5 million and a progressive rollout in 2026.
According to a statement from the insular corporation, the Insular Government Council has authorised the contract for this service and its gradual implementation throughout the next year, specifically in the first half of 2026.
The Mobility Councillor, Eulalia García, explains that this measure follows its initiation at the end of 2024 in Fasnia, Arico and Güímar, which, in her opinion, has improved the mobility of over 13,000 people living in hard-to-reach areas of those municipalities.
In the 151 days of service operational until 30 June, it had been used by more than 10,500 passengers, the councillor indicated.
How, when, and where the new demand-responsive buses will operate
This free demand-responsive transport service is now being expanded to five geographical areas:
- Tacoronte–El Sauzal
- Santa Úrsula–La Victoria–La Matanza
- Los Silos–El Tanque–Garachico–Icod de los Vinos
- La Guancha–San Juan de la Rambla
- Güímar–Arafo
This demand-responsive service is a public transport initiative complementary to the regular bus service, aiming to connect residents in more remote areas to major bus stops on the main routes, facilitating their mobility, García adds.
This way, it enhances “the accessibility of public transport and allows us to reach areas that we cannot reach with the bus,” the councillor states, indicating that the service will operate from 06:00 to 21:00 on weekdays with a minimum of two vehicles, though up to four may be offered depending on the areas.
