The Circle of Businesspeople and Professionals of South Tenerife (CEST) has raised the need to study and analyse «in depth» the model of taxi service currently used in Mallorca (Balearics). This proposal aims to «assess its possible implementation» in the region and on the Island as a «potential solution to improve mobility in Tenerife».
The system applied by the Mallorcan taxi sector is based on the joint provision of the service by 80% of the taxi licences on the Island, which are concentrated in just eight of the 53 municipalities in Mallorca. From the CEST’s perspective, the implementation of such an agreement «optimises available resources, reduces journeys with empty vehicles and, consequently, improves service efficiency», noted the president of CEST, Javier Cabrera.
Another aspect highlighted by this business association from the south of the Island refers to the fact that «this model helps to expand and strengthen the available offer for users, especially during peak tourist demand periods».
Cabrera Amador also pointed out that it is a proposal that deserves to be rigorously evaluated, considering that «the mobility crisis we are experiencing and the issues surrounding the efficiency of the taxi service in tourist areas require seeking different alternatives that provide urgent solutions».
“Mobility is a fundamental challenge for the economic and tourist development of South Tenerife”
At this point, the president of the Circle of Businesspeople reflected on the fact that «mobility is a fundamental challenge for the economic and tourist development of South Tenerife», an aspect about which «we believe that any formula that helps improve the quality and availability of transport should be at least considered and analysed», something he hopes will happen with this public proposal.
The Circle of Businesspeople and Professionals of South Tenerife insists, therefore, «on the importance of addressing this study jointly with the public administrations and the taxi sector itself, always seeking solutions that benefit both professionals and citizens and visitors».
Temporality
The taxi sector has clarified to the CEST that the agreement applied in Palma de Mallorca “is based on temporality”. In a publication made on social networks, they informed that «the agreement will be effective 24 hours a day during the established season, which begins this Wednesday, 30th (of July) in Palma, Calviá, Esporles and Valdemossa, and will be valid until 30th September 2025. It is expected that the regime will re-enter into force next year 2026, from 1st June until 30th September».
Objective: debate
This is one of the objectives that the Circle of Businesspeople and Professionals of South Tenerife has set with its proposal, «to open a free debate» on the issue as one of the ways to progress in finding a solution «to a significant problem for citizens». It is about understanding how this problem is tackled in other similar regions and deepening knowledge and analysis.
