The Cabildo de Tenerife has decided to activate the Plan of Emergencies Insular of Tenerife (PEIN) starting from 08:00 hours on this Wednesday, 6 August, in response to the pre-alert for high temperatures and alert for forest fire risk declared by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands under the Special Civil Protection and Emergency Care Plan for Forest Fires in the Autonomous Community of Canary Islands (INFOCA).
Additionally, the insular corporation will implement level 1 measures for the prevention of forest fires, meaning that making fires in recreational and outdoor areas -whether barbecues, bonfires, gas stoves or cookers- is prohibited, as well as the use of any type of machinery or tool that may create sparks (strimmers, welding equipment, spark-producing machines or cutting tools) and the use of any pyrotechnic material in high-risk areas.
Moreover, smoking is prohibited in recreational areas, camping sites, campgrounds, tracks and trails, viewpoints and other public infrastructure located in the mountains.
Recommendations
The Cabildo de Tenerife recommends that the various Councils of the Insular Corporation evaluate the possible cancellation or postponement of outdoor activities that were scheduled, particularly those whose area of development coincides with the indicated zones and areas. Furthermore, it advises municipalities to consider adopting preventive measures in line with the risk situation.
In regards to the population, it is advised not to access or stay in forest areas; to take extra precautions across the entire insular territory with any activities that may cause fires, and to take self-protection measures against high temperatures.
